The ferry-town harbor of the North Shore, a walkable village where Bridgeport passengers disembark for a day.

Port Jefferson is the ferry terminal for the Connecticut crossing, which gives it a harbor-village feel that reads more New England than Long Island. The downtown is walkable and runs a steady restaurant-and-shopping stack, with Stony Brook University a few miles south keeping the demographic tilted younger than most North Shore villages. The village opted out of dispensaries in 2021, so there's no licensed storefront downtown; the nearest sit in the surrounding Town of Brookhaven, in East Setauket and Coram. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Adults 21+ only.
