Ask five Long Islanders where Farmingdale is and you will get five correct answers. The name covers an incorporated village in Nassau County and, across the county line, the Suffolk hamlet of East Farmingdale, and both share the 11735 ZIP code. A Farmingdale address can sit in either county, under either set of town rules. For adults 21+, that line is the single most useful fact about the place.
Two Farmingdales
The Village of Farmingdale is in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. It incorporated in 1904 after a local referendum, had 8,466 residents in the 2020 census, and is built around Main Street and the Long Island Rail Road station.
East Farmingdale is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County. It holds Republic Airport, Farmingdale State College (despite the name, on the Suffolk side), and a long stretch of Route 110 lined with industrial and commercial buildings.
The two blur together on the ground. Most people only notice the county line when they look up which rules apply.
Main Street and the train
The village's Main Street is a compact walkable strip of restaurants, cafés and shops, and it gets most of its life from the Farmingdale station on the LIRR's Ronkonkoma Branch, right off Main Street. For anyone coming from the city or western Nassau, the train makes this one of the few Long Island town visits that doesn't require a car.
November evenings on Main Street are the town at its most local: no beach crowd, no summer traffic, and the restaurants full of people who live within a mile.
Bethpage State Park
On the village's western edge, Bethpage State Park is the region's best-known public golf facility, with five courses. The Black Course hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009, the PGA Championship in 2019, and the Ryder Cup in September 2025, when Europe won 15 to 13 for its first away win in 13 years. It remains a state-run public course, which is the remarkable part.
Off the fairways, the park has hiking and biking trails and bridle paths. From December 1 through March 31, with enough snow cover, it opens cross-country ski trails and sledding for steerable sleds, inflatables prohibited.
The aviation side of town
During the Second World War, the Farmingdale area became a center of the aircraft industry, led by Republic Aviation, which operated at what is now Republic Airport in East Farmingdale. The American Airpower Museum occupies part of the former Republic site, at 1230 New Highway, in a hangar built around 1940 on what is still an active airfield, with restored warbirds, some of them still flying.
It is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. General admission for adults is $18, with lower prices for seniors, retired military and children, and free entry for active-duty military. On a cold weekend it is the best indoor hour in the area.
Farmingdale State College
The SUNY campus sits in East Farmingdale with a Farmingdale mailing address, which contributes to the general confusion about where one Farmingdale ends and the other begins.
A Saturday in Farmingdale, in order
Take the LIRR to Farmingdale and start on Main Street with breakfast. Drive or ride east across the county line to the American Airpower Museum for its 10 AM opening, and give the hangar a full hour. In the afternoon, head west to Bethpage State Park for a walk on its trails or, in a snowy winter, the cross-country ski loops; the picnic area stays open year-round. Finish back on Main Street for dinner, a few minutes' walk from the train.
For adults 21+: the county line decides
This is where the two-Farmingdales problem becomes useful.
- The Nassau side has no dispensaries. No village or town in Nassau permits adult-use dispensaries as of 2026, and the Village of Farmingdale is inside the Town of Oyster Bay, which opted out in 2021.
- The Suffolk side is where the shops are. The Town of Babylon opted in and zoned dispensaries into the Route 110 industrial corridor, with buffers from homes, schools and houses of worship. Several licensed shops sit there under Farmingdale mailing addresses, and the town sets their hours at 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 10 AM to 8 PM on Sundays.
- Verify every one. A "Farmingdale" address on a storefront says nothing about whether it is licensed. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov, posted near the entrance of every licensed shop, and use the dispensary directory for the current list.
- Delivery reaches the Nassau side. The 2021 opt-outs blocked storefronts, not delivery. Licensed delivery is prepaid, with an ID check and signature at the door.
Bethpage State Park is state land, and New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces, which also covers Main Street and the station platform. The Route 110 corridor is a driving errand for almost everyone, and the same rule applies as anywhere on Long Island: never drive after consuming. For edibles, at home and for newcomers in particular, start low, go slow.
The Farmingdale hub collects the rest of the site's coverage, and the neighboring Babylon and Hicksville hubs cover nearby towns. Local events through the season are on the events hub.
