Bay Shore

The largest Fire Island ferry port, a downtown revival and a seasonal surge that shapes the retail rhythm.

Bay Shore is the main staging town for Fire Island, with ferries to Ocean Beach, Saltaire, Kismet, and Fair Harbor all leaving from here. The downtown has been through its own Main Street revival, restaurant row on Main with the ferry terminal a short walk south. Bay Shore sits in the Town of Islip, which opted out of dispensaries in 2021 and tabled a 2025 proposal to opt back in, so there’s no licensed storefront here. The nearest licensed shops for adults 21+ are in the Town of Babylon or Brookhaven. Fire Island itself has no licensed retail and sits largely inside a federal National Seashore, where cannabis possession is prohibited. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces.
