Ocean Beach

Fire Island’s walkable center village, rental cottages on a car-free grid, and federal Seashore rules all around it.

Ocean Beach is the largest of the Fire Island communities and the one most visitors mean when they say Fire Island. It’s an incorporated village, chartered in 1921, with its own police and code, and it sits inside the boundary of Fire Island National Seashore, a federal National Park Service unit where the Park Service prohibits possession or use of any amount of marijuana. The village runs a walkable grid of rental cottages, restaurants, and a handful of shops on the bay side. There's no licensed cannabis retail on the island. The beach and village streets are public space, and New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Adults 21+ only.
