Ocean Beach

Fire Island’s walkable center village, a rental-porch cannabis rhythm with state-land rules on the sand.

Ocean Beach is the largest of the Fire Island hamlets and the one most visitors mean when they say Fire Island. The village runs a walkable grid of rental cottages, restaurants, and a handful of shops on the bay side. There's no licensed cannabis retail on the island itself, so the pattern is to stock up on the Bay Shore mainland before the ferry. The beach is state-owned land and New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces, which makes the rental-porch at sunset the default use-case for adults 21+ rather than anything on the sand.
